Surgical dentures are dentures that are placed after natural teeth have been extracted.

There is two ways of making these. They can be made ahead of time and inserted immediately after the extractions are done. They will act as a band-aid and help reduce bleeding. You would also never have to go without teeth. However more adjustments will be needed.

Another option is to wait until your gums have healed, approx 8-12 weeks, and then get impressions taken and the dentures made. An advantage to waiting is that you would be able to have a try-in appointment where you get to try in the teeth in wax to see how the teeth will look.

You will experience the fastest bone loss in the first 6 to 9 months following extractions. Temporary liners are placed to help the denture fit better during this time. After 6 to 9 months a reline is needed. At this time we take new impressions and replace all the acrylic to match the gums after the changes have occurred.
